Art. 2173. When a third person, without the knowledge of the debtor, pays the debt, the rights of the former are governed by articles 1236 and 1237.

What this article means
When a third person pays a debt without the debtor's knowledge, recovery is governed by Articles 1236 and 1237 — he may recover only insofar as the payment benefited the debtor, and is not subrogated to the creditor's guaranties.
