What this article means
Defrauding another — by abuse of confidence, by false pretences, or by other fraudulent means such as tricking someone into signing a document, rigging a gambling game, or destroying court records — is punished on a scale keyed to the amount defrauded: prisión correccional maximum to prisión mayor minimum above Two million four hundred thousand pesos (₱2,400,000) up to Four million four hundred thousand pesos (₱4,400,000), with one year added for each additional Two million pesos (₱2,000,000) but a ceiling of twenty years; prisión correccional minimum and medium above One million two hundred thousand pesos (₱1,200,000); arresto mayor maximum to prisión correccional minimum above Forty thousand pesos (₱40,000); and arresto mayor medium and maximum at or below Forty thousand pesos (₱40,000). Bouncing-check estafa carries its own heavier scale, from prisión mayor in its minimum period for amounts not over Forty thousand pesos (₱40,000) up to reclusion perpetua for amounts over Eight million eight hundred thousand pesos (₱8,800,000), and failure to fund the check after notice of dishonour is evidence of deceit.

- He took my money by claiming influence and connections he did not have — is that estafa?
- He will not return money I entrusted to him for a specific purpose — is that estafa?
- How long do I have to make good on a bounced check before deceit is presumed against me?
- I signed a blank sheet and something was written above my signature later — what crime is that?
- I was tricked into signing a document I did not understand — is that a form of swindling?
